St. Croix Tannic Bass Fly Rod

St. Croix Tannic Bass Fly Rod

The St. Croix Tannic Bass Fly Rod was born from the challenge of pulling trophy bass from the gnarliest cover. We’ve all been there: a perfect pocket opens up behind a cypress knee or under a maze of mangrove roots, but it demands a pinpoint cast with a bulky, air-resistant popper. Standard fast-action rods can feel like clubs, lacking the finesse for a delicate landing, while softer rods don’t have the backbone to stop a big fish from burying you in the weeds. The Tannic solves this with a purpose-built design that blends immense power with surprising sensitivity and a light swing weight. This is not just a rod for bass; it’s a specialized tool for dominating structure-oriented fly fishing, allowing you to punch flies into tight windows and control the fight from the first head shake.

Blank

At the core of the Tannic is a state-of-the-art SCIV+ Carbon Fiber blank, a hybrid material that strategically blends the raw power and durability of St. Croix’s SCIV carbon with the refined feel and reduced weight of premium SCVI carbon. This isn't just marketing—it's a tangible advantage you'll feel on your first cast. The blank is engineered with Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) mandrel technology, eliminating the transitional weak points found in many multi-piece rods for a smooth, single-piece feel and incredibly efficient power transfer. To handle the stress of pulling big fish from heavy cover, we’ve incorporated Advanced Reinforcing Technology (ART), which adds a layer of carbon fiber to the blank’s perimeter to dramatically increase hoop strength and prevent ovaling under extreme load. The entire package is bonded with our Fortified Resin System (FRS) for superior durability. The action is fast but not broomstick-stiff; a responsive tip allows for quick loading on short casts, while the powerful mid and butt sections provide the lifting power needed to turn a fish on a dime. The blank is finished in a rich, dark "Tannic" color, a nod to the stained waters where bass thrive.

Guides

Stripping Guides: We selected SeaGuide Ceracoil stripping guides, which feature slick, durable ceramic inserts housed in dark PVD-coated stainless steel frames. This combination ensures minimal friction for longer, smoother casts with heavy bass lines and provides exceptional corrosion resistance in both fresh and brackish environments.

Snake Guides: The running guides are SeaGuide light wire snake guides, also finished with the same PVD coating for maximum slickness and durability. They are strategically sized and placed to easily pass knots and handle the aggressive, short-headed tapers of modern bass fly lines without tangling or impeding line speed.

Reel Seat

The reel seat is a lightweight, uplocking, machined-aluminum design chosen for its uncompromising strength and reliability. Dual locking rings ensure your reel stays securely mounted, preventing any wobble or loosening during a long day of casting heavy flies. The entire component is anodized in a stealthy flat black finish for superior corrosion resistance and to minimize flash. An integrated hook keeper is machined directly into the reel seat, providing a convenient and snag-free place to secure your fly while moving between spots.

Rod Tube

Your Tannic Bass Fly Rod is protected by a premium, logo-branded rod tube with a rugged nylon covering and a reinforced cap and butt. Inside, a finely stitched and divided cloth rod sack keeps the individual sections separated and safe from scratches during transport.

Warranty

This rod is backed by St. Croix’s Superstar Service plan, a 15-year transferable warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship. This is not a blanket "no-fault" policy. Should the rod break due to an accident, misuse, or normal wear and tear, the Superstar Service plan provides for repair or replacement for a predetermined service fee. The warranty ensures your investment is protected against any manufacturing issues for years to come.
