Hackle Hair is a synthetic hackle built on a mono core. The fibers on the core have a slightly embossed texture that has a scale-like effect, making it a great choice for a range of streamer patterns. Easy to work with, you can strip the fibers off of the core to tie in as a tail/wings, cut it to length and tie in longer tails, and you can even palmer it to create full bodies that are packed with motion. Hackle Hair comes in a variety of different colors, and this material sheds water nicely and quickly, making it as easy to cast as it is to tie with.

Uses

Hackle Hair is a pretty versatile material. You can strip the fibers off the core to tie in as a tail/wings, cut it to length, and tie in longer tails, and you can even palmer it to create full-bodied streamers. Although this material seems like something that you'd use exclusively for larger flies, you can cut the fibers off the core to tie legs and tails on nymph patterns such as damsels and dragonflies.

Comparisons

Since Hackle Hair is designed to provide a synthetic alternative to hackle feathers, an easy comparison would be something like Hareline's Strung Saddle Feathers. Strung Saddles can also be tied in as tails/wings, palmered, and you can strip the fibers off of the stem when you need shorter fibers; however, apart from the fact that synthetics shed water more efficiently, one big difference is that Hackle Hair can be cut to size, whereas Strung Saddles would be greatly compromised if you trimmed the fibers.
