What can be credited to Jim Estes walking around a dollar store with an open mind has now become one of the hottest flies of the last few decades in the Bead Head Mop Fly. First tied in Bryson City, North Carolina, the Bead Head Mop Fly was created out of a desire for simplicity and an inkling that microfiber nubs on a mop would properly replicate Sourwood Worms and attract fish. And boy was Jim right. It didn't take long for the Bead Head Mop Fly to gain popularity, and it was found that changing the color of the nub and size of the fly allowed for quick imitations of other terrestrial and aquatic insects like crane fly and caddis larvae.
With an ability to function as an effective attractor as well as imitate specific insects, the Bead Head Mop Fly has a lot of versatility and can be fished through riffles, under trees where terrestrial insects are prone to falling, and even in stillwater settings--panfish and other freshwater bass are no strangers to falling victim to a Bead Head Mop Fly.
